KPV peptide: research, side effects and dosage in studies
In short
KPV is a peptide of three amino acids that has only been studied in cells and animals: the FDA found no human studies [1]regulator. It has no marketing authorisation as a medicine in the EU [11]regulator.
- KPV is the last three amino acids of the hormone alpha-MSH, but it has not been seen to have the skin-darkening effect of alpha-MSH [9].
- In mice, KPV eased chemically induced inflammation of the colon [5, 6]C; in one study it was given in drinking water [5]C. The result applies to mice.
- The FDA found no human studies and no toxicity studies, and says the safety risks of KPV in humans are unknown [1]regulator.
- In the United States the FDA proposed that KPV should not be added to the list of substances allowed in pharmacy compounding [1]regulator; according to news reports the committee narrowly voted otherwise [15]E, not peer-reviewed.
- The Finnish medicines list does not name KPV [13]regulator. WADA does not name KPV, but it probably falls under class S0, which prohibits non-approved substances at all times [12]regulator.
What is KPV?
KPV is a short peptide made of three amino acids: lysine (K), proline (P) and valine (V) [1]regulator. It is the last three amino acids of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), that is, alpha-MSH(11-13) [9] [6]C.
Alpha-MSH dampens inflammation, but it also darkens the skin. KPV has been studied as an anti-inflammatory agent because it has not been seen to have the pigment effect of alpha-MSH [9].
KPV has no marketing authorisation as a medicine in the EU or EEA [11, 14]regulator, and according to the FDA it is not a component of any medicine approved in the United States [1]regulator. Basics: What are peptides?. All substances: Peptides A-Z.
Evidence at a glance
Each cell gives the kind of study and its source. The letter is the evidence level, not the result.

| Safety | No human exposure data [1]regulator | No toxicity studies [1]regulator | - |
"-" = no such study is known.
What is KPV studied for?
None of the uses below is approved, and none has been studied in humans [1]regulator.
- Gut inflammation: mouse models of colitis in which inflammation was induced with a chemical or by transferring T cells [5, 6, 8]C, see Promising, but only in animal and cell studies.
- Inflammation in general: a mouse study in which KPV reduced the build-up of white blood cells in the abdominal cavity [7]C.
- Skin wounds: researchers have suggested KPV-like peptides for treating skin wounds, but this would need clinical studies that have not been done [1]regulator [10].
Claims online. Websites promote KPV for gut inflammation, skin problems, histamine intolerance and mould exposure, among other things. There are no human studies of these uses [1]regulator.
How does KPV work?
Nobody knows for sure how KPV works. According to the FDA, the actual target of KPV in the body is still unknown [1]regulator.
KPV does not seem to act through the same melanocortin receptors as alpha-MSH. In a mouse study its anti-inflammatory effect remained when these receptors were blocked, and the researchers suggest it acts rather by blocking the action of interleukin-1 beta [7]C.
In cells, very low KPV concentrations blocked the activation of the NF-kappaB and MAP kinase pathways that drive inflammation [5]D. In the gut, KPV is carried into cells by the PepT1 transporter, and there is more of this transporter than usual in an inflamed colon [5]D.
For comparison: KPV is studied as calming inflammation, whereas LL-37 has a two-way effect on inflammation, raising and lowering it in cells.
Has KPV been studied in humans?
No. The FDA searched PubMed, Embase and ClinicalTrials.gov, among others, and found no clinical studies, case reports or other human exposure data for KPV by any route [1]regulator.
All evidence on the effects of KPV comes from cell and animal experiments, mainly mouse models of colitis and rodent wound models [1]regulator [5, 6]C. According to the FDA, effectiveness cannot be assessed because there are no human data [1]regulator.
Promising, but only in animal and cell studies
These findings look good, but they have not been tested in humans [1]regulator. Results from animal and cell experiments cannot be carried over to humans, and they say nothing about the effect of products sold online, because different salts and derivatives are sold under the KPV name [1]regulator.
-
Gut inflammation no human studies
KPV added to drinking water eased colon inflammation induced in mice by two chemicals (DSS and TNBS). MPO activity, a marker of neutrophils in the tissue, fell by about half in the DSS model and by about 30% in the TNBS model [5]C. In another mouse study, KPV sped up recovery from DSS colitis and from colitis induced by transferring T cells [6]C. In a later mouse study, KPV carried to the colon in nanoparticles eased colitis [8]C.
If it held in humans: inflammatory bowel disease might be treatable with KPV taken by mouth.
Why it might not translate: the inflammation in mice was induced with a chemical or a cell transfer, which is not the same as human bowel disease [5, 6]C. It is not known whether KPV taken by mouth reaches the colon in humans; in mice it has been carried there with special nanoparticles [8]C.
Evidence now: three mouse studies [5, 6, 8]. No human study [1]regulator.
-
Calming inflammatory cells no human studies
In cells, very low KPV concentrations reduced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in human gut cells and T cells [5]D. In mice, KPV reduced the build-up of white blood cells in the abdominal cavity in two inflammation models [7]C.
If it held in humans: KPV might dampen inflammation outside the gut as well.
Why it might not translate: a cell culture and the abdominal cavity of a mouse do not show what the substance does in the human body. According to the FDA, its target is still unknown [1]regulator.
Evidence now: one cell and mouse study and one mouse study [5, 7]. No human study [1]regulator.
Who studies KPV?
The studies on effects are cell and mouse experiments on gut inflammation and inflammatory cells [5, 6, 7, 8]C. There are also two reviews of alpha-MSH and related peptides [9, 10]. The most comprehensive recent assessment is the FDA's 2026 meeting material, which goes through all the information the FDA found on KPV [1]regulator.

How long does KPV stay in the body?
Nobody knows how long KPV stays in the body, because there are no human data [1]regulator. In the gut, KPV is carried into cells by the PepT1 transporter [5]D. Applied to the skin, it passed poorly through human cadaver skin in a laboratory test, which according to the FDA could limit the effect of KPV applied to the skin [1]regulator.
What are the side effects of KPV?
There are no data on the harms of KPV in humans. According to the FDA, the potential safety risks of KPV in humans are unknown [1]regulator.
What users report. In the Reddit accounts we compiled (not research), 39 of 70 people (56%) reported some harm, most often: injection site reaction (9, 13%), allergic reaction, hives or rash (8, 11%) and anxiety, irritability or low mood (6, 9%). People tend to post when something goes wrong, so this share does not tell how common harms are. 48 of 70 people (69%) used other substances at the same time, most often BPC-157 (35), GHK-Cu (28) and TB-500 (27). KPV was often part of a blend (for example KLOW). So the figures describe use that included KPV, not KPV on its own. The harms in detail: KPV user experiences.
What has not been studied
- Toxicity: the FDA found no single-dose or repeat-dose studies, and no genotoxicity, reproductive or carcinogenicity tests [1]regulator.
- Immune reactions and aggregation: the FDA is particularly concerned that there are no data on these. According to the FDA, peptide aggregation can raise the risk of immune reactions [1]regulator.
Adverse event reports
The FDA adverse event database had no KPV reports up to December 2025. According to the FDA, no firm conclusions can be drawn from the database, because reporting is voluntary [1]regulator. More: Side effects and safety.
Interactions and who has no data
Because there are no human exposure data [1]regulator, there is no information on interactions with other medicines in humans. For the same reason there are no data on pregnancy or breastfeeding, children or people with long-term illnesses.
What speaks against it and what is unknown
There is no direct evidence against KPV, because there are no human studies. The biggest problem is the lack of data: according to the FDA, effectiveness and safety cannot be assessed [1]regulator.
Evidence against
- KPV applied to the skin passed poorly through human cadaver skin in a laboratory test [1]regulator.
- In its meeting material the FDA proposed that neither KPV nor its acetate salt be added to the list of substances allowed in pharmacy compounding [1]regulator.
What the evidence does not support
- "KPV is a proven treatment for gut inflammation": it is not. The gut results come from mouse models of colitis [5, 6, 8]C, and there are no human studies [1]regulator.
- "KPV is the same as alpha-MSH": it is not. KPV is the last three amino acids of alpha-MSH, and it has not been seen to have the skin-darkening effect of alpha-MSH [9]. A mouse study also suggests it does not act through the same receptors [7]C.
- "The FDA has approved KPV for pharmacy use": it has not. The FDA proposed the opposite and had made no final decision by 12 Oct 2026 [1, 2]regulator.
- "KPV applied to the skin is well absorbed": in a laboratory test it passed poorly through human skin [1]regulator.
What is unknown
- Whether KPV works for anything in humans [1]regulator.
- Whether KPV is safe: there are no toxicity studies and no data on immune reactions [1]regulator.
- How KPV works: its target is unknown [1]regulator.
- Whether KPV taken by mouth reaches the colon in humans [8]C.
KPV dosage in studies
There is no approved dosage and no dose studied in humans, because there are no human studies [1]regulator. The only amount below is from a mouse study. It is not a recommendation, and an amount used in animals does not transfer to humans.
| Study | Who | Dose and route | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colon inflammation (2008) | mice | 100 µM (100 micromoles per litre) in drinking water | 8 days in the DSS experiment [5]C |
There are no doses studied in humans, so there is no dose page or calculator preset. Doses of other substances: Dosing.
Combinations and blends
Combinations have not been studied in humans. Websites also promote KPV in combinations with BPC-157 and TB-500, but there are no human studies of these uses either [1]regulator. More: BPC-157, TB-500 and Peptide blends: what is in the vial and why the seller's label is not enough.
Situation in the United States
The FDA Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee discussed KPV on 23 July 2026. In the meeting material the FDA proposed that neither KPV nor its acetate salt be added to the list of substances allowed in pharmacy compounding, and the committee was asked to vote on each form [1, 2, 3]regulator.
According to news reports, the committee narrowly voted to allow US compounding pharmacies to make KPV, against the FDA proposal [15]E, not peer-reviewed. The committee view is a recommendation. Neither the vote result nor an FDA decision was on the FDA meeting page or in its meeting documents on 12 Oct 2026 [2]regulator.
On the FDA risk page, KPV is among substances that had been placed in compounding category 2 because of safety risks and whose nomination was later withdrawn by the nominator [4]regulator. The July 2026 meeting did not review a new nomination: according to the meeting material, the FDA evaluated KPV on its own initiative after the original nomination had been withdrawn [1]regulator.
Is KPV legal in Finland?
KPV has no marketing authorisation as a medicine, and the Finnish medicines list does not name it [11, 13]regulator. The list is not exhaustive, however: a substance that meets the definition of a medicine in the Medicines Act is a medicine even if it is not listed [13]regulator.
- Marketing authorisation. On 12 Oct 2026 EMA's data on centrally authorised medicines contained no medicine with KPV [11]regulator. The EMA Article 57 database, which must list every human medicine authorised in the EU and EEA, had no KPV product in any country (data as of 21 Sep 2026) [14]regulator.
- Medicines list. Fimea decision 230/2025 does not name KPV [13]regulator.
- Import. Ordering medicines from outside the EU is covered on Peptides and the law in Finland. Bringing them back from travel: Travelling with peptides.
This is not legal advice. Disclaimer.
Is KPV doping?
Probably. The WADA 2026 Prohibited List does not name KPV, but class S0 prohibits at all times any pharmacological substance not covered by the other classes and with no approval by any government health authority for human therapeutic use [12]regulator. KPV has no such approval in the EU or the United States [1, 11]regulator. Athletes should check with their national anti-doping organisation.
How is a KPV product assessed?
There is no way to be sure what a product contains. According to the FDA, several different salts and derivatives, which may contain a different active substance, are sold under the KPV name, and inconsistent naming can mean that a user gets a different substance than intended [1]regulator.
The certificates of analysis (COA) for KPV that the FDA found usually reported only purity, not impurity limits or any information on peptide aggregation [1]regulator. A seller's own COA therefore does not show product quality or safety by itself. KPV is promoted as an injectable, an oral product, a topical product and a nasal spray, and there are no quality or safety data in humans for any of these forms [1]regulator. More: How to read a COA and check a test result.
